Snow-capped peaks in the distance. Students standing in the cold. Doing something that feels almost rebellious these days: putting their phones away, choosing discomfort, running together.
This is Monks and Freaks.
MAF was founded because a question kept bothering us: what does it actually take to build something real? Something that pushes young people and helps them grow, not just feel good for a moment.

We kept seeing the same paradox playing out among young people around us: endless digital stimulation but zero depth, thousands of followers but crushing loneliness, every comfort optimized yet nothing meaningful. It's easy to look at this and shrug. To tell yourself it's someone else's problem, that you're just a design studio in a small Slovak town. Doing nothing is always the easiest option. But we believe we're not here to follow the easiest path. We're here to follow the right one.
Running became our foundation. It strengthens the body and clears the mind. It builds discipline. And it demands almost nothing to start. Just shoes and the willingness to show up.
The name carries the tension we wanted to embody. Monks represents discipline, stillness, intentional restraint. Freaks represents wild freedom, pushing limits, living fully. We built a visual language to match: dark, moody photography, bold typography, and messaging that challenges rather than coddles. "Live for the things worth dying for." "Say no to what feels good. Pursue what is good."
Starting something in a small city comes with its challenges. Some of our early team leaders left Poprad to study in bigger cities. The hype faded. People doubted whether this could last. We had to rebuild, finding new people and sponsors who believed in the vision.
Today, the movement draws 40-50 people to monthly community runs. We care about this city and the future it holds. We believe these young people have a purpose far bigger than they think. Monks and Freaks is our invitation: stop chasing what feels good. Start building what is good.
